With March well underway, it's been nearly two months since my last update. The Orions are coming along nicely, the first nineteen blades are ground and ready to go to heat treat. Here's a shot of some of them taking form...
As you can see in this photo, the knives are definitly not done yet. They have a long way to go before being shipped and flipped. That said, you can see some fully ground blades in this photo. Some of my personal favorites are the swedged knives, which were requested by customers as special order. A couple of these will make it to my webstore when it goes live later this month, so keep posted.
I have finished a couple prototypes, which are for sale. If you see one you like send me an email (willmooncustomknives@gmail.com), they're 650$ a piece. These are prototypes of the batch, one with a satin blade, the other with a mirror polished one. Steel is .2 inches of precision ground cryo-treated ATS-34 with .23inch 6Al4V Ti handles.
There has been some concern over the handle spacing from various forumites around the interwebs, but candidly, I don't see a problem. For a knife of lesser tolerance, having the handles sit together can lead to blade play, however since the Orions are machined within .0002 inches, there is no cause for concern. Also some folks have mentioned there is a possibility of handle pinching, so I've switched to a deeper rounding of the handles which is much more comfortable for the flipping crowd. However, flipping is not this knife's intended purpose: it's a heavy duty knife that can take the abuse other knives can't, not a nimble trick knife for sport.
Regardless, it does look nice. I've been really happy with how some of the blade and handle finishes have been coming out. Everything's hand ground and profiled, so each blade and handle is unique and individual.
More to come. First knives are shipping in their foam lined Pelican cases to customers in about a week. If you would like to order an Orion, please see my webstore when it goes online in about a weeks time, I will have a few available for order but most are spoken for. First come first serve.
